WiHM Special - Sarah Schultz

A guest on several previous spotlights, I'm pleased to welcome back Sarah Schultz to talk about her latest projects, including her collaborative work with HorrorMonger and her latest short film, "The Voodoo That You Do."

Me: Hello, and thank you for returning to this! Since last we’ve spoke, you’ve been involved in the work of your youngest daughter in her modeling career. What can you tell us about the experience?
Sarah Schultz: Hi! Thank you so much for having me again! She signed with The Young Agency in Phoenix over a year ago and has been training with actor/model Natalie Sperl for acting and runway. She has grown so much! She was even a guest on a podcast, "Make Your Own Fun." She was nervous but killed it. Her latest photos are stunning!!

Me: With the latest venture including working with Alice Cooper in his latest fundraiser, how did that come about? What went into making her ready to go through with the appearance?
SS: My oldest went to the teen center 2 summers in a row. We know the staff well, and I spoke with Hodgie, who is handling everything for the show. He stated he would like Khloe to walk the runway, and Lyrica, our oldest, to take photos! That event happens this Saturday, March 7th. We have 2 more rehearsals, and she attended a dress rehearsal last Saturday. She met with Natalie, her trainer, on Sunday. She is ready!!

Me: What has the reception to the event been like? What has been the most memorable experience you’ve had with helping her out?
SS: Giving her the same advice I was given at her age when I walked the runway seemed appropriate. Hyperfocus on one object, look at that, but don't forget to give the camera a smile and a wink. Watching the talent practice has been awesome! There are dancers in between the runway walks, and they are quite impressive.

Me: As well, your other daughter has branched out into writing with the publishing and subsequent public reading of her first story. What was it like to experience that with your family?
SS: It was awesome!! She has such a knack for storytelling. Her story, "The Mortician," was based on me. You can actually purchase the book on Amazon; every purchase goes to the charity, Unbridled Pathways. "A Night of Misfit Stories" is chock full of great horror writers locally in Arizona.

Me: Outside of this, you’re also involved with the continuation of your modeling career through several new shoots. What can you tell us about how this came together?
SS: I am also signed with The Young Agency. I recently got some new photos done, and I cannot wait to share them. I was asked to kick off their 30th anniversary week with a video, to which I had a shoot to follow. Khloe's trainer took some great shots of me within the last year, and my good friend Tay Boyd, of TAB Photography, at the Riparian Wildlife Preserve in Arizona. It's all about making connections in the industry and helping each other out.

Me: With the collaboration through Horror Monger Collectibles, including working on several short films, what are you most looking forward to with its upcoming release to a wider audience?
SS: The whole crew at HorrorMonger are great friends. Aaron, the owner, was kind enough to lend us his store to shoot the beginning of the film, "The Voodoo that You do." Josh has shot commercials regarding HorrorMonger's upcoming events. They are truly Arizona's horror store. I hope that more people learn about Horrormonger through the release of the movie, as well as supporting indie films.

Me: The first of these is the short film “The Voodoo That You Do.” What led you to partner up to create the film? What was the early life of the short like?
SS: My husband has worked with Clay Moffat and Adam Berardi before this; he was an actor strictly for 3 years before Covid hit. Adam asked. me if I would play Anna. I read the script and loved it! Adam is an amazing person to work with. He also asked Josh to direct, which was fun. I love working with Josh. He is so smart, and his wheels are always turning. We knocked the film out in a few days!

Me: Playing the character of Anna, what was it like to play that type of character? What got you into her mindset while filming?
SS: I channeled the crazy ex. Spunky, poppy, bubbly, a bit of Regina George from Mean Girls, with a mix of Karen. It was fun. Acting is all about playing make-believe. I basically thought about the crazy exes I am familiar with and threw in some of their actions with my character.

Me: What was the set like while shooting the film? How did the cast and crew react to the type of film being made?
SS: Amazing! Like I mentioned before, we shot the first scene at HorrorMonger Collectables, and the rest at my home. Late late nights and long hours, but fun. The cast was great, Nadine Jackson is an angel. She ran through lines with me before we worked together. The crew was superb. Khloe was the script reader, Lyrica BTS. A family affair!

Me: Do you recall having any odd or funny on-set stories about yourself or any of the other cast/crew members?
SS: I had to be super dramatic about shoving pins in the voodoo doll. Playing it back, Khloe and Lyrica had jokes but kept it quiet lol. I also loved it at the end when I had to cough and stuff my nose with Kleenex. At that point, I felt like I was delirious because it was 2 am. I played sick well lol. I also had to record my scream, which I did in the prep room at the Morgue.

Me: What else are you working on that you'd like to share with our readers?
SS: I was asked about filming out of state this summer for an indie film out of North Carolina/Atlanta. The person I spoke to is extremely huge in the horror industry, so my excitement is like no other. If it goes through, I will be visiting Stranger Things locations. I also am working with Khloe finishing up filming of her movie she is making with friends, "A Skinwalker in the Woods," written by director Eric Lawson. Besides that, just applying for roles and seeing what the future holds!

Me: Lastly, being that this is our Women in Horror Movement, what special message do you have for any women out there looking to join in the industry in any capacity as you are one yourself? Thank you again for your time!
SS: Don't take shit from anyone, I don't care who they are. Don't be afraid to show emotion in your acting, be proud. Remember that reputation is important, and remember we all leave behind a legacy. Thanks for the interview. Always a pleasure. :)
