Plot:
After a series of strange incidents, a police detective tracking the crimes realizes the connection between a mysteriously ominous surfboard related to the scene of each crime and a local legend about a being possessed by the islands’ spirits, and must uncover the reason why it’s targeting a local woman.
Review:
Overall, this was a rather fun and generally likeable goofy genre effort. One of the more enjoyable facets of this one comes from the use of local Hawaiian culture and folklore to help tell this kind of wild and silly tale. The main setup focusing on a series of strange incidents around town that are either strange close calls where a town member was nearly killed or outright killed in a strange accident that slowly comes to be a reaction to something said to a specific woman who’s involved in the accidents, which sets this up to be a massively fun tale from the start. The inability to recognize the pattern and go through this as though it’s a series of isolated incidents gives this a great touch, as it allows for a great slew of running jokes, from the woman’s promiscuous past, the kind of inability to honor the past that so many modern films bring about, and the rest of the locals trying to go about their lives without knowing it’s all related to the board. As well, with the constant mentions of the local folklore and different figures around them, this all manages to provide a lot of fun in getting its ingredients together.
From there, this one becomes an immensely fun time showcasing the board going through the community, taking out various victims with several wild and outrageously silly setpieces. From the board springing to life and nearly falling into victims until they’re pulled away at the last second, the attacks on several random beach-goers, or the showcase setpiece involving the surfing competition taken out in a swarm of dismembered limbs, decapitations, impaling, and just general interactions with the board ramming into them that bring about the fake body parts and just wild concepts that can only be pulled off by the being in particular. With everything here being rather silly and stupid as well, so it’s even more goofy than it should be, there’s quite a lot of likable elements within here to overcome the one lone drawback here in how long this one goes on. It takes a while before the killer surfboard is found out, as the majority of comedy setups here take centerstage with the community poking fun at her past or the general sense of authorities disbelieving what’s happening, which tends to drag this out overall, but it’s pretty much the main issue here.

An immensely likable silly genre effort, there’s quite a lot of worthwhile features here that keep this one going over a couple of barely detrimental factors and make for a solid time overall. This is recommended for those with an appreciation for this kind of silly genre fare, who are tolerant of the issues on display, or who are curious about it, while most others out there should heed caution with it.
