Review:
Overall, this was a barely tolerable and problematic thriller without much going for it. The main thing here is that the general premise of what's going on is quite solid and could've provided some potentially intriguing ideas here, along with the idea of the group of friends getting together for a special New Year's Eve party that is turned into a series of murders once the group is thrust into their darkest desires. This is a formulaic idea but works for a reason, as there's some enjoyment in this one watching it unfold from the generally happy festivities against the later section involving the unraveling chaos spurned on by the desire to keep everything happening is checked off, and they can remain in the same lot in life as they were before. That is a fairly obvious setup that tends to focus on the aspects of ruined friendships that are imposed here before it switches to the type of dark thriller content that the rest of this goes into.
However, that's where the film falters when it goes into this kind of generic, out-of-touch group-of-friends storyline where they turn on each other at the drop of a hat, and it doesn't change things up much once it starts. From the prompt that starts everything and the initial accident that puts the film in motion, the series of secrets revealed and the pressure to admit things as they occur are handled with the expected energy usually found in these kinds of films. Putting everything into the incredibly problematic view of requiring them to forego rationality and logic for the sake of keeping things going makes for a dull experience as it tries to lean on the idea of surprising revelations and secrets that are brought up when the point is supposed to be about giving the film a sense of tension about raising stakes. That causes this to be a rather problematic entry here that underwhelms as it goes along.
Overview: */5
A more problematic thriller than it should be, this one had some potential to be more worthwhile than it is, as the series of issues here are more troublesome and detrimental, lowering this one overall. Those with an appreciation for this kind of genre fare or who aren’t bothered by the issues here will have the most to like about it, as most others out there should heed caution.
