Review:
Overall, this was a disappointing, if still watchable enough, genre effort. Among the main positives for this one comes from the simpleminded, one-note setup at play that allows this to be a pretty solid barrage of encounters as the vicious killer attacks others. The viciousness of the attacks, striking out of nowhere and with a streak of violence that belies the inability to get caught, there’s plenty of fun to be had with the way this provides the kind of starting point where the seemingly superhuman strength and aggression present in the various ambushes come off incredibly well, as the opening massacre at the pool party as well as the resulting stragglers shown left behind, the later attack on the stoners at the second motel, or the one-shot attacks on the driver by his broken-down car, finding the girl taking a shower, or the final charge on the motel workers, it all comes together incredibly well to deliver plenty of brutality and carnage in the graphic and over-the-top kills.
Outside of that, there’s not much to be had here. The shortened, stripped-down running time that barely gives this a chance to breathe before going to the next kill is the main issue here, introducing a slew of random characters without much in the way of getting to know their names or what they’re about before heading over to the next kill scene. That makes everyone here pretty much a blank slate as it goes along, making what we know about them to be reliant on what they do while waiting for the killer to strike and leave the presentation looking like a loose assortment of sketches tied together with the inclusion of the same killer. As well, there’s also the fact that there’s a general lack of information about the killer and his motives since all we get is a brief bit about the detectives trailing him for several years, since the film doesn’t have the chance to dive into this much. As well as some low-budget limitations that show up at points, these all bring this one down.
Overview: ***/5
A solid and generally likable indie slasher, this one features quite a lot to like that manages to keep this one going along rather nicely against a series of slight issues here, which do pop up. Those who enjoy this type of indie genre effort or who are curious about it will have a lot to like, while most others out there might want to heed caution.
