Review:
Overall, this was an immensely disappointing and underwhelming genre effort. Among the better features within here is the solid and likable enough central storyline that manages to take a cliched setup and foundation. The whole idea of the group embarking on a trip out into the woods to have a party at a friend's cabin and coming across something there killing them off one by one is a time-honored tradition here, and the different interactions we get around the house and surrounding woods paint the picture of it leaning into these cliches rather heavily. The time we spend around the cabin getting to focus on the group having fun and trying to have a relaxing weekend before being confronted by the potential killer lurking around who begins to sow seeds of doubt over which of their group is the potential source of everything, takes this a slightly more intriguing take than expected looking at the various issues they bring to the table that causes them to snap on each other.
There are quite a few problems with this one holding it down. The biggest issue here is that the pacing of this is absolutely abysmal and just plain glacial, keeping this one so sluggish it feels far longer than it really is. This spends far too much time in the beginning stages of the group getting out of school, hanging around trying to plan out the party, or driving around picking others up, so that it feels like an eternity before even getting to the cabin for the party itself, and hardly any of it is interesting when they barely get to a likable stage at all. It gets better when the group arrives at the cabin and can show off some personality a bit more relaxed environment, but there's still a lot to go to get this back on track based on the starting point where they're not overtly irritating but are more about keeping the pace to this to be lacking in action because of how much we're following them around doing innocuous stuff to start.
That leads heavily into the other detriment, where it's just not that focused on slashing to make the long wait worth it. With the group not even arriving at the cabin until the half-hour mark and the first encounters with the killer occurring around an hour in, this doesn't leave much time for those factors, as it doesn't fit the type of frenetic killing spree that the structure might imply. With the focus more on the group tensions and interpersonal dynamics than slashing, there's not much here that provides the kind of genuinely thrilling stalking and slashing that might be expected in this one. The titular game, which could've been a way to introduce novel deaths for everyone, is barely explored, and we know little about the killer or his motivations anyway, leaving him more of a mystery than anything and making this a big hurdle to get over. Combined with the obvious low-budget limitations on display that crop up, these all manage to bring this down.
Overview: *.5/5
An underwhelming and barely interesting slasher, there are some enjoyable elements within here that get overruled by the different negatives on display, which keep this down overall. Those with an appreciation for these kinds of films or who are fine with these factors will want to give this a shot, while most others out there will want to heed extreme caution.
