Review:
Overall, this was a solid and effective sequel effort. Among the better elements here are due to the exploration of the mythology established from the original, which gives this some likable factors by filling in a lot of gaps from the first one. Since it never explains almost anything regarding the mystical dimension where the children disappear to when they’re abducted, it is finally revealed here with the exploration of the supernatural realm and how to access it, which is presented here as a means of alchemy brought about by various individuals throughout history. That is given quite a bit of context throughout here, with the constant intrusion of the thugs coming into the story attempting to prevent her friend from learning more, adding a conspiracy-like touch to the proceedings.
These are accomplished with some rather fun moments here involving the team going around, capturing the children, and attempting to spell out the whole point of unraveling the mystery about the symbolic nature of the location where all the disappearances come from. This occurs through the clandestine operations they take part in, where it’s mostly based on various interactions against the children, while hoping to reveal the truth about what’s going on with the friend looking into the disappearances.
However, while the lore here gets established nickel, it also suffers from the same thing that the original did, where it’s not all that scary or threatening, with the kids not really doing anything beyond looking menacing when they appear, simply content to be standing around watching everything without doing anything. It leaves this with more of a mystery angle than outright attacking people, so those looking for that kind of genre action will be disappointed in the lack of material here. It’s really the main issue here, holding this one down compared to the other factors with this one.
Overview: ***/5
A watchable if slightly frustrating follow-up, there’s more than enough to like here, which keeps this one going alongside some of the same issues that plagued the original, especially for genre fans. Those with an appreciation for this style of genre fare or who are fans of the creative crew will have a lot to like here, while most others out there should heed caution.
