A guest on several previous spotlights, I'm pleased to welcome back Shannon Atkins about her upcoming film "The Sabilla Six" and other projects.
Me: Hello, and thank you for returning to this! Since last we’ve spoken, you’ve been involved in the upcoming film “The Sabilla Six,” which you wrote, directed, and starred in. What can you tell us about the film?
Shannon Atkins: Hi Don, thank you so much for having me back. I always enjoy these interviews. The Sabilla Six is about the dangers of online dating and social media. This film means a lot to me, and I can't wait for the world to see it.
Me: Where did the inspiration for the film come from? Were there any unique stories about its conception?
SA: The scenarios used for the film are of my own and those of the other girls involved.
Me: Being the writer, director, and star of the feature, did it challenge you to be involved in various capacities at once on a project like this? How do you balance those priorities during a shoot?
SA: To act and direct at the same time is challenging. I am fortunate enough to have an amazing cast and crew, and a phenomenal AD.
Me: With a cast of experienced and talented indie actors, how'd you settle on the cast getting involved in the film? What characteristics did you look for with each performer that they brought to the table that helped bring the production to light?
SA: With this film, I did not need to hold auditions. I hand-picked each cast member from experience working with them in the past. Not one of them let me down!!!!
Me: What was the set like while shooting the film? How did the cast and crew react to the type of film being made?
SA: With this being a dark film, I believe the cast and crew handled the scenes as well as could be expected. I am always cautious with the amount of time we take on certain scenes. Brakes were taken when needed, and I always made sure my cast was comfortable.
Me: Do you recall having any odd or funny on-set stories about yourself or any of the other cast/crew members?
SA: I am a complete klutz, so the cast and crew always got a show, lol. We were filming on a horse farm, and the horses would like to add their own dialogue from time to time.
Me: What are you most looking forward to with its upcoming release?
SA: I hope this film will make a difference in at least one woman's life. If I can do that, then I have a successful film!!!
Me: Outside of this, you’re also involved as an actress with the upcoming anthology film “Head on a Writer’s Block.” What can you tell us about your segment and your character, Brooke? What was the set like while shooting the film?
SA: Brook was my first leading role. I was so fortunate to work with so many talented actors. I remember showing up to set and meeting Jim Krut for the first time, and I was barely able to speak full sentences. lol Without giving any spoilers, the role of Brook was challenging and exciting to play. This anthology is so special to me, not only do I have a role in one instalment, but I also directed an instalment.
Me: What initially attracted you to the role of wanting to play her? Was there a role of yours in the past that helped get you in the proper mindset during filming?
SA: This was the first time I got to play a role like this, and I always like a good challenge.
Me: As well, you’re also involved in “The Hellwitch Guardians” as Kira Maddox. With a stacked cast of talented indie actors and actresses involved, what are you most looking forward to getting to work with familiar names and those you haven’t worked with before?
SA: I can’t say much about this film at this time, but I am most looking forward to working with my friends and working with new talent.
Me: With the frequent work often bringing plenty of opportunities to work with friends and colleagues on multiple projects, does that help to make grueling shoots more enjoyable?
SA: I believe it does, and it helps to have chemistry.
Me: What else are you working on that you'd like to share with our readers?
SA: Black Sheep-post production
Uncle Fred's Monster Problem- filming this spring
Sssssstoner Snakes-premiering April 20th
Sharkoween-premiering 2027
Me: Lastly, being that this is our Women in Horror Movement, what special message do you have for any women out there looking to join in the industry in any capacity as you are one yourself? Thank you again for your time!
SA: There is never a right time to start; you just need to go for your dreams. You need to have thick skin in this industry; they will call you fat, they will say you're too skinny, and they will try to break you down. DON'T LET THEM!!! Never compromise your morals or values. If you don’t feel comfortable with something, then you do not have to. You are going to work with directors who will tell you that the only thing you're good for is being nude; don’t listen to them. I promise you some talented directors will work with you and not make you feel uncomfortable.
Thank you so much for having me be a part of this group of women.
