Review:
Overall, this was a fairly fun and silly genre effort. One of the better elements here is the excitedly unhinged storyline that brings about some fun interactions and exciting ideas throughout. The whole point about the beginning of this is making such a point about her unlovable condition, basically drowning in a specific stench from her work as a gravedigger that renders anyone attempting to court her into such a state of unease because of the lingering smell from her job, that the first chance she spots someone potentially willing to be with her sends her into a generally wound-up tizzy that it’s impossible not to side with her on her quest for companionship. When he’s killed and is forced to be taken from her, the resulting spiral into attempting such wild experiments at resurrecting him and using the bodies from those she’s buried at the graveyard sends this into a wild, madcap mad doctor scenario that winds up creating a truly unruly series of attempts to bring him back to life.
That the whole thing is made all the more unhinged and over-the-top because of the presentation gives this a series of goofy and truly silly moments throughout. Taking on the presentation akin to a play more than a genuine genre fare with the way the sets and costumes appear, the over-the-top melodramatic style of dramatic performance, and the flimsy props for the effects, the atmosphere of this one is a truly odd and bizarre one that makes everything feel that much more of a cheesy good time. Not even taking the content into account, this offers up the kind of odd subject after that is quite endearing on the surface, even though this type of approach is decidedly one-note for those who don’t appreciate such fare. It’s all too localized on a specific style of comedy or presentation that might not be for everyone out there, based on this kind of silly joke taking place throughout the film, being the one main potential flaw that might lower this one.
Overview: ****/5
A generally strong and likable genre effort, there’s a lot to like here that manages to present this one as a solid enough take on the style, even though that might also be the one main issue with it. Those with an affinity for this style or approach, or who are fans of the creative crew, will have the most to like here, while most others should heed caution.
