Review:
This was a pretty disappointing and underwhelming genre effort. Among the better elements of this one comes from the creativity employed here to utilize the multiple storylines and features that might not normally come together. The whole idea of the different figures here, from the adult film crew looking to carry on with a scheduled shoot that brings them into contact with the criminal gang who are looking for the money that was stolen from them, with the secondary story about the mother looking for the camera containing the spirit of her dead son stuck inside it as a result of a cursed ritual to save his soul makes for an intriguing enough setup.
The multitude of storylines on display make for a scattershot opening that eventually gets sorted out in the finale, where it all comes together in a series of intriguing and far better than expected stalking scenes of the spirit running wild on the remaining groups. With everyone intermingling, there’s some fun to be had with the bodies being killed off in the supernatural manner that they are, and how the shadowy kill scenes take place with everything being seen through the camera rather than anything else. It all leads to some rather fun elements that don’t make this a complete waste.
However, beyond all that, there are some pretty big issues with this one. The main issue is that so many of the storylines here are pretty underwhelming or just flat-out weak, making it somewhat hard to get invested in what’s happening the storylines about all these different activities taking place are way too convoluted for this type of film, presenting extra elements that don’t need to be there which are just cluttering up the mess being presented here where it all gets muddled together into several underwhelming factors that are hard to keep straight or remain interested in.
That also ends up highlighting the fact that there’s so little connection for everything that it never makes any sense how everything comes together, what makes the mother so determined to save her son’s spirit by ignoring the common sense of why the killer spirit goes around attacking others, and the whole inclusion of the criminal gang keeping control of the shoot which all just make this immensely difficult to get behind. Since this all takes up so much of the running time as well, it all causes this to have a staggered pace with very little happening at first, only to then rush through a lot of encounters in the finale, which is a bit disappointing, all of which brings this one down.
Overview: **/5
A disjointed and overall underwhelming genre effort, this one manages to be enjoyable enough not be a total waste but has way too many problems to be anything but a disappointment. Those with an interest in this kind of material who aren’t bothered by the drawbacks will have the most to like here, while most others out there should heed extreme caution.
