Review:
This was a massively enjoyable drive-in throwback. Among the better elements within this one comes from the rather silly and effectively over-the-top setup that allows this one to play within those aspects rather well. Featuring the convoluted workaround of an alien vampire invasion that manages to bring about an invasion of the reanimated zombies around town, forcing the citizens to come to terms with the idea of that going on that all this provides the kind of perfect starting point for a cheesy 1950s throwback. The wild plan involving the creatures raised from their population as a consequence of a special antivenom brought about by the ability to let vampires walk in daylight, which offers up the kind of starting point where the film can utilize the absurdly silly effects used for everything here, from the spaceships to the zombie make-up, and the effects of the small town lifestyle present that contribute to the feeling of complete goofiness within here.
There’s also the series of interactions here within the town that paint the picture of the silly group of individuals coming together to battle off the seemingly inept group of locals trying to make sense of everything going on. The small-town police and the rest of the citizens shown at the center of the film are kept so inherently clueless and unable to find any kind of realistic mindset that it pushes beyond the point of parodying the style and format into being so hard to believe they managed to survive as functioning adults as long as they have. That’s not the point of the genre, and it comes across more for the sake of the joke, but it’s more frustrating than funny with how it all comes together. Some might also manage to find fault with the presentation of everything that manages to be effectively cheesy and silly to the point of being immensely off-putting for how goofy it all looks, being what manages to hold this one down overall.
Overview: ***/5
An overall effective if slightly problematic cheesy genre effort, there’s enough to like here that keeps this one watchable enough, while still being let down by the detrimental factors here. Those with an interest in this style of genre fare or who are curious about it will have the most to like here, while most others should heed caution.
