Review:
On the whole, this was a rather strong and enjoyable character study. The best factor within here is the chance for the film to offer up the kind of intriguing character work that allows this to stand out differently from the rest of the genre's qualities. The idea of the central character in something like this differentiates itself from most other genre efforts, looking at a zombie apocalypse not as a means of identifying a flaw within themselves that needs fixing, but more of an inconvenience to their own plans, taking things on a wholly different path than expected here. That this is more of a bleak, downbeat persona we follow here, who's trying to find a way to survive their own life as a depressed character, not wanting to rise up and be a hero, even if that is what it all starts pointing towards. The interactions that take place at the school once that occurs give everything the kind of impressive interactions where it drops the focus away from what is the more expected series of interactions and confrontations that take place.
As it starts getting prepared, it establishes the dynamic main character we follow, taking a different spin on the zombie horde outbreak storyline that this employs. Bringing everyone to a closed-down school and trying to bring about the kind of prototypical interactions between the students, looking to ensure they remain safe and secure with the kind of alpha-boss mentality that goes along with these kinds of films, focusing on having proper supplies for everyone, and having the final say on the fates of others. This is all pretty familiar and doesn't leave the film with much in the way of interesting content for much of the running time, much less dealing with the zombies on-screen. What we get is a lot of fun, especially the chaotic opening attack or the race to get into the school itself, but it's not often enough due to the more character-based interactions that take place within the school, which give this a quiet, moody setup featuring the quietness of the situation against the frenzied zombie action. These all make for some big issues that hold it down.
Overview: ***/5
A strong if somewhat frustrating zombie tale, that this is a solid genre outing, while being somewhat plagued by focusing on factors other than what a hardcore fan might be looking for, is the main issue here. Those with an appreciation for this kind of material or undemanding genre fans willing to give it a shot will have a lot to like, while those looking for straightforward zombie carnage might be more disappointed with this one.
