Review:
Overall, this was a rather fun mockumentary-style genre effort. Among the better elements with this one comes from the engaging set of characters that we follow throughout here, based on the strong first half, giving us a look at the girls in the coven. The whole first half manages to give off a fantastic idea of who each of the different girls are, from free-spirit trying to get them naked as often as possible, a more grounded old-school witch, an herbalist who uses natural remedies, and an emo-goth influencer looking to expand her network online which all gives the girls enough variation in their identity to make them all stand out. This is given an incredibly fun boost with the different roommate struggles or just general life issues that might be found in such a grouping, as everything is allowed its own space to work out who each of the girls is, what their powers are, and how that plays a role in their placement within the coven as a whole. This allows for a fun time looking into the conflicts that arise from their differing ideas and personalities, and gives this a lot of interesting confrontations within the group, trying to get everything sorted out in fine fashion.
When it introduces the possibility of the group having to be split up once the group starts to get way beyond living with each other, this one offers up a solid storyline to go along with the fun characters. The part of the coven who are interested in getting what they want at the expense of the harmony created within the coven, from the spells created involving them cursing each other members and trying to seduce non-coven members as an act of revenge, gives this section a sense of urgency to go along with the comedically goofy content featured here. Regardless of the intent behind it all, serving to trigger the group fighting back in the end, which has some rather fun and silly moments at play within here. The end result, involving everything coming together during the livestream celebrations that the one member performs, ends this on a downward note since the whole thing is a massive coincidence that doesn’t require them to do anything, so it ends without any kind of satisfying conclusion, and with. The low-budget origins on display do provide this, with the only real drawbacks.
Overview: ****/5
A rather fun mockumentary take on witches, there are plenty of fun aspects to this one that manage to overwhelm the few minor drawbacks on display that keep this lowered just slightly. Those with an interest in the style or subject matter, as well as those who are curious about it, will have a lot to like here, while most others out there should heed caution.
