Review:
This was a generally weak if still somewhat watchable genre effort. One of the better elements with this one is the method of going through the build-up to the figure getting released in the house to attack everyone. With the main focus early on the group getting to reacquaint themselves and catch up after being away for a while, they manage to miss a lot of the obvious clues involving something strange going on involving mysterious neighbors, only some of them meet, the background information about the house’s history, and the dreams warning about the figure’s intentions with everyone. That these go unheeded for quite a while makes them somewhat more intriguing than they really should, with the gradual confrontations in the second half giving this some chilling elements involving the revelation of the truth behind the figures’ release and why they’re there, as it all leads to some fun moments to let that play out.
However, beyond that, there’s not much to be had here. The film’s sluggish pace and overly obvious low-budget limitations prevent it from doing anything about the potential fun to be had here. The main focus is on getting the group back together, catching up with each other, and going through the early stages, ignoring the signs as they carry on their weekend get-together, slow things down to a crawl, spelling out what’s going on around them, but then once it sets up that something’s wrong, it never really does anything with it. Sitting around discussing what’s going on and what the signs mean offers up a dull, dragging setup that’s immensely cheap, especially with all of the survivors present, since it doesn’t have the kind of budget for that kind of storyline. Without much in the way of action and little help in getting something exciting going due to the budget, there are a few big issues to be had here, holding this one down.
Overview: *.5/5
An underwhelming and generally problematic genre effort, there are some likable factors here that are mostly undone by the slew of issues on display, which lower this one significantly overall. Give it a shot if you’re a fan of the style attempted here, while most others out there should heed extreme caution with this one.
