Review:
This was a worthwhile if somewhat confusing genre effort. Most of what works here is spent on the constant demonic visuals and the constant influx of possession and truly dark material present in this one. The main storyline involving the mother getting possessed by a demonic figure after she’s sexually abused by her father and becomes pregnant by him, failing to abort the child, and then finding the aborted child grew up to be possessed by the demonic figure forcing him to go on a vicious killing spree all makes for a generally great setup to provide a slew of impressive shock visuals here. From the actual traumatic scenes of the abuse that takes place to the scenes of her trying to get rid of it despite the tell-tale signs of the possession deforming and mutilating her face, and the later scenes of the bodies being discovered in severely mutilated states of the victims left alive due to the demonic influence forcing them to do this, there’s some fun brutality on display here which is rather enjoyable.
Aside from that, there’s very little to this one that works. Most of that is due to a randomized, scattershot approach to its storytelling, where this one seems like brief skits connected together into something resembling a plotline. Going from a woman who’s abused by her father to carry his child, then getting possessed by a demonic entity who goes on to possess her son after he survives an abortion attempt only to turn into a ruthless serial killer once he survives and targets his older sister makes for a wholly chaotic and disorganized story, especially with this jumping around from random time periods so there’s a nonlinear timeline to follow on top of these jarring setup shifts. As this barely gives us a chance to understand the demonic influence under observation here, which has no real connection to anyone in the film, or has a chance to explore anything before it shifts gears to a different style and subject matter entirely, it does have some big issues here keeping this one down.
Overview: **/5
An intriguing if overall problematic genre effort, there’s a lot here holding this one down compared to the few positives that are present here, it can’t overcome these issues. Those with an appreciation for this style or who are fans of the creative crew will have the most to like here, while most others out there should heed extreme caution.
