Review:
Overall, this was a fairly solid and enjoyable found-footage effort. Among the better factors with this one is the rather intriguing and enjoyable setup, which manages to give a worthwhile starting point. Immediately introduced to the streaming world and her type of vlog content of her dating life and the struggles involved in finding a partner that eventually leads to the one solid connection she thought she had in the one woman that later leaves her alone after the date. The desire to go out and find out what happened comes off genuinely enough so that the eventual reveal of everything being about a vampire on the run from a group of hunters looking to destroy the species as a whole that soon becomes a rather fun battle between the three and the group hunting them that keeps this moving along quite well.
That comes about through some rather fun encounters that generate the kind of sudden, shocking violence that vampires are capable of. Launching onto random strangers or others attacking them in brief spurts and feeding on them makes for a great time with the multitude of victims taken out here, especially once she’s turned and is unable to control herself, as that leads to a lot of fun as well. With the big finale keeping things interesting as the full reveal of what the hunters are after them for and the various brawls and chases taking place down the city streets, including a series of rather intriguing encounters featuring the kind of brutal vampire action expected in this kind of setup where they fight off the hunting clan attacking them one last time, trying to remain free. It’s all enough to make for a fun time.
There are a few factors here that keep this back. The main issue here is one of the absolutely lamest possible reasons for being found-footage, as the film’s production style is clearly not supposed to be, but turned into found-footage with the different cameras being featured, trying to make the scene come together. Found-footage shouldn’t switch between multiple cameras or feature sky drones or traffic cameras in the neighborhood to tell its story, yet it does so here, and with the alternate scenes shot by people at angles a camera shouldn’t be or during a period they wouldn’t, the whole thing is confusing as to why they utilized found-footage for this beyond the novelty. As well, the whole thing about vampires showing up on video or in photos is never explained, and with the low budget in effect is what helps hold this one down.
Overview: ***.5/5
A stellar indie effort with quite a lot to like, this one comes together quite well for what it is and manages to hold itself up over some minor drawbacks that do bring it down. Those with an interest in the concept, who are curious about it, or who appreciate this kind of indie fare in general, will have the most to like, while most others out there should heed caution.
