Review:
This was a generally awful and not that memorable genre effort. About the only thing that comes together here is the kind of backstory that comes along here that tries to build upon what happened in the previous film, with some intriguing work involving the various demonic spirits this one brings up. Focusing on the nature of the killer as a possessed being and forcing the survivor to confront the fact that it’s not over yet, there’s a lot to like here, as it brings about a genuinely logical reasoning for the continued hauntings from her deceased friends. These are brought about rather nicely as the deformed and mutilated bodies appearing before her and trying to psychologically manipulate and unnerve her make for a wholly disarming series of encounters when it happens, taking the possession literally with their attempts to seduce and manipulate her while trying to search for answers and help along the way, and resulting in some bloody scenarios.
That said, there’s little here to get invested in. This is just way too confusing about what’s going on, as hardly anything makes sense beyond the idea of her being subject to a slew of confrontations involving her possessed friends coming back to haunt her, as the story never makes anything clear about what’s going on. The demonic figure at the center of everything is hard to pinpoint what his purpose is, as there’s no clear-cut methodology to his encounters, attempting to psychologically taunt her one moment to kill her the next, and it’s pretty difficult to understand what the purpose of what’s going on is when it’s so inconsistent. Even more troubling is the bizarre nature of the guardian, which complicates matters further by not spelling out his point or purpose until the very end, rendering everything more confusing as his pseudo-tough guy act makes the film dull and boring, waiting for some kind of clarity when he’s roughing up random strangers, coming together to bring this down overall.
Overview: 0.5/5
A general mess of a film without much going for it, this is a severely disappointing and not that worthwhile feature that has so few likable qualities that it doesn’t serve much purpose overall. This should really only be taken on by those who enjoyed the original and are curious about it, while most others out there should heed extreme caution.
