Review:
This was a generally fun if completely disorienting genre effort. One of the enjoyable factors here is the generally silly and over-the-top approach to what’s going on, as while it might not be as funny as it should, there’s still a lot to like here. The central setup of the movie, being made on the property of the original massacre, with one of the survivors as a consultant and stumbling upon the suspected killer still alive despite being assumed dead, and using the events of the film shoot to regain his memory, even with the outside interference disrupting their plans, is quite a fun time. There’s a great mix of being able to switch between the various setpieces here from the different time-periods that help to bring about a great mix of comedic action of the revived killer going around the woods taking out not just those looking to film the movie but also the other residents that show up as that provides the kind of random indie shock ambushes for a solid series of brutal yet still comedic gory kills. Featuring a great finale where the action picks up and the body counts deliver alongside the silly character storylines being concluded nicely, these do have some enjoyable elements.
There are some big issues with this one holding it down. The main drawback to be had with this one is that it’s so disjointed and hard to tell what’s going on that it becomes immensely difficult to keep track of what’s going on. The film switches between what originally happened in the original massacre being remade, the exploits of the family war going on, and the film shoot going on, remaking the story just becomes so jumbled together and nearly impossible to sort out that it’s hard to tell which period is which or what’s going on. That goes along in accordance with there being multiple killers with different motives and backstories that are being utilized here, where the connections of everything going on here are so badly handled that it’s massively confusing. That goes hand-in-hand with the comedy here, which is incredibly hit-or-miss and revolves around incompetence, exasperation, and just plain ignorance of the situation that comes together for the sake of trying to tell a joke, only to fail miserably, so it doesn’t have too many laughs as well. Alongside the generally cheap production look, these are what hold this one down.
Overview: ***/5
A fun if somewhat confusing horror/comedy, there’s still plenty to like with this one that manages to be likable enough, even with some issues holding it back. Those with an interest in the subject matter, who aren’t turned off by these issues, or who are diehard fans of indie slashers like this, will have a lot to like, while most others should heed caution.
