Review:
For the most part, this was a fairly solid and likable effort with a lot to like. Among the better features here comes from the engrossing setup of the film that makes for a fun time getting to follow the premise at hand. With the setup involving the initial murder at the location in the past before going to the first encounter years later, and then the friend moving in a year later, where the story picks up, this serves to create an intriguing starting point for what's going on inside the loft. When it starts to affect her mentally and within the universe here, where her friends and her job start to suffer from being at the loft, this one starts to come together incredibly well at detailing that something's going on in the location. When it comes to the backstory reveal of everything, tying together not just the opening incident but numerous others that occurred there over the years, it starts to make more sense with the way everything slowly starts to approach the central storyline here.
That those incidents and encounters are designed to be incredibly chilling scenarios where the victims are manipulated by the ghostly being trapped there, which looks like suicidal attempts to either attack themselves or others around them. These encounters provide quite a lot to enjoy with the suddenness of the whole thing turned into a somewhat solid series of encounters throughout the loft, which feature some strong and memorable moments, including one victim attempting to slice their throat open and another trying to slice their friend up with a carving knife. The wild climax, featuring enough action and spiritual shenanigans due to the attempted ghost-busting that gives this a solid series of likable factors about it. The main issue here is that it really struggles to make the friend group likable, with everything revolving around an argument or making light of past issues with everyone else that are featured here, which come together as the few issues with this one.
Overview: ***.5/5
A fun if only slightly troubled genre effort, this one manages to be really likable for what it is, even if those few minor flaws are enough to bring it down in the end. Those with an appreciation for this style or approach to the material or who are curious about it will want to give it a shot, while most others out there should heed caution.
