Review:
Overall, this was an intriguing but ultimately disappointing genre effort. The main factor here that works for this one is the rather charming setup that looks to ape the format of the found-footage genre over the years. This one tends to focus on the tried-and-true formula of a popular group of Youtube content creators looking into doing something different to enhance their presence online and end up visiting a local haunted house in the middle of the woods for their channel, only to end up even further out of their element when something is found inside the house, and it works well enough at generating a decent enough atmosphere with that kind of starting point. The way the events unfold and progress from there, including the various means of investigating what’s going on, which intensify as time passes, and the chilling series of resolutions that come together the longer they stay there.
Beyond all that, though, there’s just not a whole lot going on in the rest of the film to warrant this kind of setup to take place. The general storyline here is so generic that it’s hard to feel any genuine interest in what's going on with the film, which opts for a formulaic approach that dozens of others have attempted as well. With the focus on trying to make this due to the focus on the group being as hurtful to each other as they are while trying to make content for the show, this lack of scares while following what soon becomes evident are irritating and unfunny people in their quest for the utmost generic material possible. It’s not helped in the slightest by a low-budget series of limitations throughout here, so it does have some drawbacks.
Overview: **.5/5
An overall likable if heavily flawed genre effort, there’s enough to like with this one that it’s not a complete waste, but it falls into the middle of the pack when it comes to overall genre placement. Give it a shot, mainly if you’re a hardcore fan of the creative crew or the most undiscerning found-footage aficionado, while most others out there should heed extreme caution.
