Review:
Overall, this was a somewhat problematic if still watchable enough genre effort. Among its better features is the sense of characterization that goes on regarding the different stories at play here. Opening up on the trauma involving sharks and the sea by witnessing her father getting attacked by the creatures, this sets up the reluctance as an adult, where her fear about being on the water and mingling in that environment makes for a strong setup when it comes time to be dropped into the dive for the treasure. When they discover it on their dive and begin exploring the remains before the interruption, it starts off rather nicely about her status and fear of the water, which gets exploited rather nicely later on.
That comes about with the series of shark attacks featured here, when the exploits involve a series of dives into the different parts of the ocean looking for the sunken drugs. With some atmospheric scenes showing the sharks stalking them on the dive and going into the ship before leaving for shore, the first attack featuring the devious attack on the fiancee while trying to escape, and a fun idea with her being targeted inside an ascending shark cage with the creatures following up after she provides this with some solid attack scenes. That they remain a threat throughout here, involving the group being attacked the second they step off the boat and into their watery home, makes them an intriguing enough threat that it keeps them involved alongside the other action involved here, making for a lot to like here.
There are some factors here that bring it down. One of the main drawbacks is the fact that there are quite a lot of elements present where the film maddeningly continue on through the rest of the running time, as they interfere with the divers. It all comes together rather weakly as to how they get together in the first place, but it’s quite lame when they continuously keep going for the wrong movement to keep them under the control of the thugs, which makes for an infuriating watch at points. As a result, that all leaves the film with quite a low amount of shark action as everything keeping them out of the water means there’s less time with them than expected, and with all of the generally cheesy effects-work throughout this one, it tends to hold it back on the whole.
Overview: ***.5/5
A really fun entry if only light on shark action, this was a rather solid outing that has a lot to like while still being let down by some minor issues that keep it down. Those with an appreciation for this kind of genre fare approached here or who are fans of the creative crew will have the most to like here, while most others should heed caution.
