Review:

This turned out to be a surprisingly enjoyable sequel effort that has some good points for it. One of the better positive elements here is the fact that there’s a great deal of action here, which makes for some great times. The film has a lot to like here where the group features several raids on vampire hideouts which are quite fun as the first encounter in the motel gets them together quite well while introducing the vampire clan’s motives. Their assault later on the underground hideout works well with the creepy darkened hallways leading itself nice to the action including a ton of shootouts and gunfire mowing them down in grand fashion with a lot of great messy kills on both species which makes for a great highlight sequence.

Likewise, the trap pulled on them during the escape is a standout as the blazing firefight turns into a spectacularly original tactic to allow them to leave and all come together to give this a lot of nice action. Even the finale on board the ship which is non-stop action from them sneaking onto the ship and getting captured, the series of fine brawls once they get free throughout the ship, and the final battle is a little short but manages to work very well as they are mostly due to an extreme amping up of gore here which makes for some incredibly messy scenes while the kicker ending tacked on works rather well. These here are what gives this one a lot to like.

Though it has some flaws. The main factor here is the fact that the extra layer to their society explored here doesn’t make for some creepy moments like it’s supposed to be. This doesn’t even make them a lot more intelligent than previously thought due to an inherent lack of explanation as to what happened amongst the group which just seems a little short and not all that detailed. That is helped along by the details given in the story as well as the action scenes throughout which never fill in these issues at all which just makes it focused on the action. The other big flaw here is the banal and needless CGI gore for the bloodshed which is distracting during every kill with the way it sticks out. Overall, this was a great and definitely worthwhile sequel.

Overview: ***.5/5
A slightly underwhelming if still enjoyable sequel, this one offers up enough to like about it although still gets let down by enough factors to be a middling overall effort. Give it a shot if you're a fan of this particular style of feature or are curious about it, while most others out there should heed caution.
