Having joined me previously for a spotlight, I'm pleased to welcome back Cindy Sanabria to talk about her latest film "Merciless Christmas" and other upcoming projects.
Me: Hello and thank you for returning to this! Since last we spoke, you’ve started prepping your
latest film “Merciless Christmas.” What can you tell us about it?
Cindy Sanabria: Hey Don, Merciless Christmas is an urban-based revenge slasher holiday horror about a man who returns home from prison to his estranged family, only to lose them a short while after. Promptly sending him on a revenge-filled killing spree.
Me: Where did the inspiration for the film come from? Were there any unique stories about its conception?
CS: I wanted to make a diverse holiday horror film with a compelling action-driven story.
Me: What did you want to accomplish with the film to set it apart from the other genre films coming out recently?
CS: Although there are now many Christmas horror films that seem to be sprouting up, there are many things that set MC aside from the rest. For one its location is set in Harlem. It’s extremely inclusive with so many talented actors from various backgrounds coming together to make a killer film! Overall, It’s a unique Christmas horror story.
Me: How much involvement did you have with the rest of the production team in bringing it to life?
CS: I have a great production team. I am and will be constantly involved with the production. It is my film so I need to see it to the end.
Me: What was the early life of the film like?
CS: The early life of this film was MURDER. I mean the biggest challenge has been raising money for the film but thankfully we are halfway through the finish line and are on our second phase of crowdfunding so we can bring this horror baby to scream…Uh, I meant screen.
Me: With a cast of experienced and talented indie actors, how'd you settle on the cast getting involved in the film?
CS: There are very diverse characters in the film. Some were a little harder to cast than others because some of the roles called for complex and/or well-trained actors. But, I am thankful for our cast and their deliveries. The film is a SAG project but we have actors that are non-union as well. They are all wonderful actors and I am thankful to provide a platform where they can showcase their performances.
Me: What characteristics did you look for with each performer that they brought to the table that helped bring the production to light?
CS: A well-prepared actor and one that is punctual. It all has to flow.
Me: With the crowdfunded nature of the film's progress, how has that altered the way the film has been shot?
CS: Everything ultimately comes down to the budget and because we didn’t raise enough for the film, it was decided to shoot what we can and get back to fundraising to finish the film rather than compromise its production value. I am satisfied so far with what we shot anyone that’s interested in watching our teaser trailer or helping out with our fundraising goals can visit https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/merciless-christmas--3/x/25179118#/
Me: What was the set like while shooting the film? How did the cast and crew react to the type of film being made?
CS: The shooting was great. I had two location sponsors that were very cooperative and accommodating. Everyone got along with one another. I can’t wait til we finish it.
Me: Do you recall having any odd or funny on-set stories about yourself or any of the other cast/crew members?
CS: There have been so many funny moments so far, that we are thinking of having a blooper reel made. I think the oddest part was recruiting two local crackheads to be in the film for “realism” in a drug dealing scene. Ha ha, just kidding…Or am I?
Me: What else are you working on that you like to share with our readers?
CS: My true crime film “Sam’s Web” is currently in post-production and should be hitting the film fest circuit soon. As soon as we wrap on MC this summer, we have a fundraising event set up for June 14,2024 for my upcoming film “TAINA” which deals more about the horrors in history. I’m also in pre-production on a holiday sci-fi thriller “New Year Nightmare” set for production in late Summer/Fall. I’m actually thinking of starring in this one. Me: Lastly, being that this is our Women in Horror Movement, what special message do you have for any women out there looking to join in the industry in any capacity as you are one yourself?
CS: If you love this genre than keep giving it all you got til you make it, and when you do never forget your struggle to get there and help your fellow female in horror out.
Thank you again for your time!
