An upcoming actress, model, and content creator, Amber Hofmeister has started off on a strong note with her career as she creates a series of strong impressions with her work. Now, in honor of Women in Horror Month, I talk with her about her early interest in acting, several of her past projects, and some upcoming films.
Me: Hello and thank you for taking the time to do this. First off, when did you get into horror in general? What films specifically got you into watching horror movies?
Amber Hofmeister: I’ve been a fan of horror since I was a wee little ghoul! Around the age of 5, I watched Killer Klowns from Outerspace and that’s what started it all! I watched Tales from the Crypt a lot growing up alongside the Friday the 13th, Halloween, and Nightmare on Elm Street franchises.
Me: When did you initially discover a passion for acting? What aspect of this industry appeals to you?
AH: Growing up I used to pretend to be a famous actress on the red carpet and always aspired to be on the big screen. It took me a while to actually gain the confidence to pursue acting but once I did I fell completely in love. Being on a set is where I belong. The creative aspect that goes along with writing and acting in film/television is most appealing. It’s also very rewarding seeing your hard work come to fruition and seeing everyone’s reaction to what you’ve created is pretty amazing!
Me: Is there any specific type of character you prefer playing? What do you look for in a character to be excited and interested in playing it?
AH: I love playing characters that are total badasses and also have a dynamic character arc. I like to look for characters that are a bit challenging to portray as well, that way I can put my acting skills to the test!
Me: Appearing in your first film “Friday the 13th Vengeance Part 2: Bloodlines” as Charity, what do you recall about the first time on a film set?
AH: Being on the set of V2: Bloodlines was an amazing experience. The set was created in Shawn’s backyard, it was so impressive! Everyone was so welcoming and by the time I had to leave, it felt like they had become family.
Me: What do you do to stay in character while on set? When you're not filming, how do you pass the time between takes?
AH: I actually try and stay in character the whole time until we are done filming. I channel whatever emotion my character is feeling by thinking of personal life events that brought about that feeling within myself. When I’m not filming I like to help out on set, be goofy with the cast and crew, and perfect my lines and character portrayal.
Me: Appearing alongside Thom Matthews, Darcy DeMoss, Tamara Glynn, and C.J. Graham among many others in the film, what tips and tricks have you learned as an actress from working on the film? What type of advice did you take from your experience?
AH: Sadly, when I was on set filming Thom, Darcy, Tamara, and C.J. weren’t there but I did work alongside the lovely and talented Darcy DeMoss on the film 2:59! On the set of Vengeance, I learned how a structured professional set should be, how everyone becomes family, how fun it is to die in a film and it also was the film that pushed me to be involved in more projects. That film will always have a special place in my heart.
Me: Among your many upcoming roles is Ashley Williams in the film “Amityville Barbi.” What can you tell us about the character and the type of film in general?
AH: Oh Ashley Williamson, one of my favorite characters to play thus far! She’s a badass, goth, demon slayer with smooth moves and serious ass-kicking skills! Her character is very much so based on Ash Williams from Evil Dead! Amityville Barbi is a fun horror comedy, in the teaser it says “It’s very Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Evil Dead” which is so accurate. I cannot wait for everyone to see this movie!
Me: With the heavy stunt-work style of shooting present in the film, what type of extra training did you have to go through for the role?
AH: Ashley has to whoop lots of demon ass so to do that safely I had to learn choreography from a stunt coordinator on set alongside the director himself, Ronin who is also a stunt coordinator/stuntman. We took a lot of safety precautions especially when I was wired up on a harness.
Me: What was the set like while shooting the film? How did the cast and crew react to the type of film being made?
AH: Amityville Barbi’s set was absolutely awesome! We filmed at a bar in Delaware, Bar 13. It was the perfect spot for the scene we were filming! Everyone was really pumped to be there, super accommodating, friendly, and having just the best time with one another! I personally cannot wait to continue filming and see everyone again!
Me: Do you recall having any odd or funny on-set stories about yourself or any of the other cast/crew members?
AH: On the set of Amityville Barbi, there’s a demon karaoke scene and boy is that a riot. It was hilarious! On Vengeance, when Jason was stabbing me with the knife it actually broke in half we had to glue it back together.
Me: With roles in other upcoming films like “The Farmhouse Murders,” “Aversion,” and “Ombis: Alien Invasion 2” among others, what are you able to tell us about these films and what to expect from them?
AH: I’m actually filming Aversion right now! This film is incredible, It's a psychological thriller, and boy is it good! Ombis 2 is a fun Alien movie that’s already been filmed and is in the post-production stage! The Crow: Days of Sodom is a Crow fan film, it’s a beautiful tribute to the original movie and comic book! 2:59 should be coming out soon as well, it’s a possession story based on true events.
Me: How do you do to keep your creative energy flowing?
AH: Honestly, it just comes naturally for me, I love nothing more than to be creative on set but even when I’m home I’m creative in other ways making art, dancing, modeling, writing movies with my husband and so much more.
Me: What else are you working on that you'd like to share with our readers?
AH: I have a few projects I’m involved in that I don’t have much info for yet but I’m definitely excited for all of them! Plus my Husband and I have been writing a very unique film ourselves.
Me: Lastly, being that this is our Women in Horror Movement, what special message do you have for any women out there looking to join in the industry in any capacity as you are one yourself? Thank you again for your time!
AH: There’s nothing like being involved in horror movies, it’s amazing and rewarding! If this is your passion absolutely go for it! Don’t hesitate for a second and give it your all! Push yourself to the limits to do your very best and don’t stop learning.
