Review:
This was a fairly solid if problematic thriller. The central idea works quite nicely as the kink involved with the killer being unable to do anything to others unless they fear him makes for an intriguing start, creating a slightly different take on the serial killer with an ethics setup that works rather nicely to give him a somewhat fun identity. The follow-up idea of doing this for the sake of religious atonement killing others for breaking sacred commandments with a religious touch makes for a different enough touch that it gives credence to the stories about him going around taking out others for doing so while falling victim to the typical hypocritical nature of what he does. That gives the conversations within the car a fun back-and-forth quality as the duo constantly looks over how to save herself against his blathering speeches.
That becomes the main detriment with this one in that the constant speeches and Biblical quotations he gives off are supposed to make sense and turn him into a terrifying figure but it all just becomes comical the more he speaks. It doesn't help that he’s barely believable as an imposing serial killer and is more an out-of-shape slough that continuously uses the religious ideology to hide behind yet whenever he gets confronted with something he quickly turns to violence to remain in control. It keeps him from being the fearful figure he’s supposed to be and tends to cause it to go around in circles so it feels somewhat repetitive to be the main issue here.
Overview: **/5
An intriguing enough thriller that has some issues with it, this one comes off decently enough for what it is although the series of issues here are what bring it down overall. Give it a shot if you’re fine with this type of genre fare, are curious about it, or are fans of the creative crew while most others out there should heed caution.
