WiHM Special - Marianne Podgorski

A well-rounded writer and director just moving into the production realm, Marianne Podgorski has channeled her career not just into a varied career as well as her work with Scream City Studios. Now, in honor of Women in Horror Month, I talk with her about her early interest in the genre, founding the studio, and work on its latest project "The Door."

Me: Hello and thank you for taking the time to do this. First off, when did you get into horror in general? What films specifically got you into watching horror movies?
Marianne Podgorski: I have been into horror since I was a kid. I remember watching the classics with Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, and Pete Cushing with my mom. We also spent every Saturday watching Creature Feature.

Me: When did you first discover a passion for filmmaking? Were you always interested in the creative arts growing up?
MP: I have been a horror and suspense author since around 1986. It wasn’t until I met an award-winning filmmaker back in 2011 that I became interested in working in the film industry.

Me: Having worked on various aspects of film production, do you have any particular preference for working on any?
MP: They all require a great deal of work. As an author, I do prefer Screenwriting of course. But I have also enjoyed Directing as well as Boom Pole Operator.

Me: When writing a new project, what's the one fall-back tactic that you're always able to draw inspiration from?
MP: When it comes to finding inspiration for a new project, I've discovered that my creativity is at its peak during the nighttime hours. There's something about the quiet and solitude of the late hours that allows my mind to wander freely and explore new ideas without distraction. Coupled with this nocturnal productivity is the presence of music, which is an indispensable part of my creative process. Whether it's the timeless melodies of classical compositions or the electrifying energy of rock anthems, music serves as the backdrop to my writing sessions, setting the mood and fueling my imagination. It's during these late-night sessions, with music playing softly in the background, that I find myself most inspired and motivated to dive into the depths of storytelling and bring my ideas to life on the page.

Me: As a major driving force in the production company Scream City Studios, what initially inspired you to become involved in the company? What do you provide for others through your work?
MP: Founding Scream City Studios was a culmination of both passion and opportunity. The initial spark ignited during the reading of my first film script, a moment when the realization hit me that this endeavor was truly going to materialize. It was a pivotal moment where I recognized the potential to not only bring my creative visions to life but also to foster a platform for aspiring filmmakers to thrive. What initially inspired me to become involved in the company was the desire to create a space where innovative storytelling could flourish. I envisioned Scream City Studios as more than just a production company but as a creative hub where ideas could be nurtured, collaborations could be forged, and cinematic excellence could be achieved.

Through our work at Scream City Studios, we provide filmmakers with the support and resources needed to transform their visions into reality. Whether it's offering guidance in script development, providing top-notch production services, or facilitating distribution opportunities, our goal is to empower storytellers to bring their narratives to the screen in the most compelling and impactful way possible.

Beyond the technical aspects of production, we also strive to cultivate a supportive and inclusive community within the industry.

Me: That brings us to your latest short, "The Door." What can you tell us about the project?
MP: The Door is a pulse-pounding short horror film, born from the chilling depths of one of my published short stories. Enter the twisted world of Elizabeth, whose childhood was haunted by the horrors inflicted by her psychotic grandmother. When she witnesses a malevolent force snatch away her closest friend, the stage is set for a spine-tingling journey into darkness.

Years later, after the passing of her grandmother, Elizabeth inherits the very house that tormented her dreams. But this is no ordinary inheritance. As Elizabeth returns to confront her demons, she soon realizes that the house itself is a malevolent entity with sinister intentions. What begins as a night of survival swiftly escalates into a heart-stopping battle for her very soul.

Prepare to be gripped by fear as Elizabeth confronts the horrors of her past in a relentless struggle against the malevolent forces lurking within the shadows. With every twist and turn, The Door will keep you on the edge of your seat, racing against time as Elizabeth fights to escape the clutches of a house determined to claim her as its own. Brace yourself for an unforgettable journey into the heart of terror, where survival is not guaranteed, and every creaking floorboard could spell doom.

Me: Where did the inspiration for the film come from? Were there any unique stories about its conception?
MP: Picture this: a dimly lit basement, the perfect setting for my spine-chilling horror writing sessions. But there's one detail that sets my meeting place apart from the ordinary—the presence of an ominous, ancient door that sends shivers down my spine. Every creak and groan of that door unleashes a flood of terrifying possibilities, fueling my imagination to run wild.

As I huddle in that eerie space alone, my mind conjures up the most nightmarish scenarios. What if, I pondered, lurking behind that door was a malevolent force, a demon imprisoned for centuries, waiting for the perfect moment to break free and unleash havoc upon the world?

The mere thought sends a thrill of fear through my veins, electrifying my creativity and inspiring me to pen tales of darkness and dread. With each passing moment, the tension mounts, as I wonder if the sinister entity behind that door will remain contained or if it will escape to wreak havoc on our unsuspecting world.

In that shadowy basement, surrounded only by the palpable aura of fear, I dare to explore the darkest recesses of my imagination, crafting tales that chill the soul and leave my readers trembling with anticipation. Welcome to my world, where the line between reality and nightmare blurs, and every creak of that old door heralds the possibility of unspeakable horror unleashed.

Me: With a cast of experienced and talented indie actors, how'd you settle on the cast getting involved in the film? What characteristics did you look for with each performer that they brought to the table that helped bring the production to light?
MP: In the whirlwind of casting calls sparked by my Backstage audition notice, a flood of talent surged forth, each actor bringing their own unique flair to the table. Amidst the frenzy, amidst the brilliance, there were moments that stood out as gems amidst the chaos.

Gathered with my team - the director, DP, and myself - we convened around a table in that same basement, illuminated by flickering candlelight, as if summoning creative spirits. It was a scene straight out of a gothic tale, where every shadow whispered secrets and every flame danced with anticipation. Our mission: to select individuals who could breathe life into the horrors lurking within that accursed house. From the bone-chilling demon children to the actress tasked with embodying sheer terror, each role demanded an actor capable of plunging deep into the abyss of fear and emerging with a performance that would haunt audiences long after the credits rolled.

With steely determination and a touch of intuition, we deliberated, weighed our options, and ultimately made decisions that would shape the very essence of our film. In that dimly lit sanctuary of creativity, surrounded by the echoes of our collective passion, we forged a team bound by a shared commitment to unleash spine-tingling terror upon the screen.

Me: What was the set like while shooting the film? How did the cast and crew react to the type of film being made?
MP: The set was a blank canvas, a farmhouse in the midst of renovation. Despite its stark appearance, my Associate Producer didn't shy away from the challenge. With determination in her eyes, she orchestrated a transformation worthy of the big screen. Buses laden with furniture and décor arrived, turning the sterile space into a vibrant and captivating set.

As the cast and crew arrived, their initial shock at the state of the house was palpable. They navigated through a maze of construction debris, stepping over boards and dodging tools left behind by the remodeling crew. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation and a hint of trepidation as they ventured deeper into the house.

Descending into the basement, the air thick with dust and the scent of fresh paint, I offered masks to the cast and crew. Despite the challenges, there was an undeniable energy buzzing in the air, a sense of excitement as we prepared to bring our vision to life amidst the chaos of renovation.

Me: Do you recall having any odd or funny on-set stories about yourself or any of the other cast/crew members?
MP: A couple of memorable incidents punctuated our filming experience. Firstly, there was the eerie presence of an old barn lurking in the shadows at the back of the property. Shooting primarily at night, the setting was already imbued with an air of mystery. However, our first night encountered a delay when the owner provided us with the wrong key, leaving us stranded outside in the dead of night until she rectified the error.

On the second night, just as we geared up for filming, an unexpected visitor made its presence known—a skunk had taken refuge in the barn, forcing us to postpone our shoot for safety reasons. As if that wasn't enough excitement, during another filming session, police officers suddenly descended upon a neighboring property, sending a ripple of concern through our crew. With quick thinking, our Associate Producer, a lawyer by profession, assured us she would handle the situation, only to realize she didn't even know whose property we were filming on. Fortunately, the authorities were focused on the neighboring house, sparing us any unwanted attention.

Me: What else are you working on that you'd like to share with our readers?
MP: I'm currently working on a spine-chilling vampire short film titled "Nightmare in Suburbia."
**Film Description:**
Get ready for a "Nightmare in Suburbia!" In a quiet suburb, Sarah and Tony's new home unveils a sinister secret – an ominous park across the street. As the moon casts an eerie glow, Sarah becomes the unwilling witness to a bone-chilling incident, drawing her into a deadly game with a sinister vampire prowling the night. The sheriff takes drastic measures to protect the town, igniting a heart-stopping battle between darkness and the desperate fight for survival.
