Short Review: Keepsake (2019) by Nathan Hine

Meeting in a bar for a date, a man and woman hit it off and decide to return to her house where their night of pleasure turns into a nightmare.

Overall, this was a decidedly fun short with a lot to like about it. The innocent setup and generally unassuming nature of their get-together alongside the remote house and drug use is undone nicely by the sudden reversal of fortune that transpires as the twisted reveal occurs quite gradually. The trip around the house and seeing the different clues that something's going to happen which go ignored due to his drugged-out state offers no real kind of hint that it's going to happen but does enhance the unease quite well. The constant attempts at coercion, whether verbal insults or physical teasing at the expected intimacy to come between them, leading him on bringing about a rather ominous atmosphere that sets this up perfectly.

When it comes to what the twist entails and what's going on, this does come off rather strongly but presents its one true flaw here. That it goes all-in on the disturbing gore and bloodshed that it does here, ranging from the slit throat to the eventual dismemberment and mutilation that takes place, makes for a great time with the over-the-top spray that arises. However, while this all works quite well the fact that it takes so long in such a short to get to this point can make for a slightly aggravating experience getting to the good stuff. Some of the disorienting visuals and the need for constant coercion to come itself like she's clearly hiding something and doing whatever she can to get him inside would work a lot better trimmed down. However, it's really all the gore here that matters which sells this rather well.
