Short Review: Game of Groans (2022) by Gerardo Chierchia

A nerdy group of game players encounter a vicious, sadistic girl gang ... and all hell breaks loose!

For the most part, this was an entertaining and fun short. The simple setup and goofy over-the-top cheese featured here provide a nice setup for the silly antics by the group that is intended to torment and intimidate the men around them. That the men are clearly too old for the roles and the women are acting with the obvious signs they're unfamiliar with how to properly use their weapons only adds to the joke and helps to make this one so fun as despite this everyone is clearly enjoying themselves in the setup.

However, the one small drawback that nearly undoes this is the final twist that just doesn't work the same way a reveal like that is intended to do. Rather than be clearly ironic and bring about the idea of the men not being able to win no matter what, this instead offers a shockingly transparent payoff that would've been hilarious had it not been done to death in numerous other efforts. It admittedly still induces a chuckle on the aforementioned basis on the men not winning regardless of what they do but since this exact same twist is included in so many other situations some of the shock is taken back.
