Short Review: MonsterDyke (2021) by Mariel Sharp and Kaye Adelaide ***Fantasia Festival 2021***

A transgender sculptress, unhappy with her experiences dating men, has a lesbian awakening when her sculpture comes to life and rocks her world.

On the whole, this is an impressive and enjoyable piece. The main focus here is on generating a form of representation for all genders but also making a case to be accepted for all forms of love regardless of their background or purpose is a big part of what to like about this one. Seeing the impetus for what draws her towards the initial experimentation by the treatment she receives the fact that everything works out for the better due to the inadvertent qualities that have been afforded to the sculpture to serve as a substitute for her needs to be serviced by a singular, accepting entity.

As well, the short also manages a lot to like with the actual creation and manipulation of the sculpture itself. Looking like a sensuous, abstract combination of a multi-tendriled feminine humanoid figure offers up a strikingly dynamic visual on its own before taking into account the impressive work to denote whether it’s alive or not. Featuring the nice work to move the tentacles around in a fun matter, working with tons of greasy slime to show the physical contact between them, and a couple of fun ideas, there’s not much to dislike or hold this one back beyond the general brevity of it.
