Short Review: Steam (2021) by João Dall’Stella

A gay couple goes to a bathhouse for a cheat night... Unaware that a killer lurks behind the steam… In this tale of sex and death, will they survive this adventure?

This was a stellar and highly impressive genre effort. The best aspect here is the fantastic atmosphere present throughout here, slowly working out a fantastic off-kilter vibe that something's not right with the location. From his hesitation and general unease with the situation and overall being out in the baths with others that aren't part of their normal routine all helps to create a highly enjoyable setup. The connotation of involving everything in the context of a gay couple and various other figures in this community working at or visiting the bathhouse is quite immersive for the most part.

When it comes time to developing the horror elements of the scenario, it's not as impressive and at times is a bit lacking. The rapidity with which it goes through the slashing of the cast with the participants getting knocked out unexpectedly does have a great sense of fun about it as well as generating some great effects-work for the kills. However, it seems almost too short of an effort for this type of storyline as it's all about the relationship before turning immediately into the slasher angle almost without any kind of setup. It could've used a bit more time to either set it up better or ease into it, but otherwise, this has a lot to like about it.
