WiHM Special - Short Film Review: The Purgamentum by Julie Bruns

Receiving a series of strange noises on her equipment, a woman and her diving partner discover something far more sinister causing the issue.

This was a really intriguing and enjoyable short. In quick fashion, this one manages to set a rather interesting backstory involving not just her working history at the station with the few hesitations against the knick-knacks on her desk or the reluctance to get in the water. This comes along rather well with the fun setup involving the strange noises being heard over the radio which is genuinely eerie and disturbing when they come over the machine. The friendly banter and laid-back nature of what's going on with the assumption of this being yet another routine situation that doesn't require much involvement beyond a routine check adds to the ambiance established here.

Once this is established, the tension rises with the descent into the water to check out the mysterious noises. With the perfectly-timed jump-scare that comes into play and setting up the final few moments where we get a fantastic revelation and some new twists being introduced, the short comes off incredibly well and offers up some quality aspects. However, it ends so abruptly that the final twist in the closing frames takes so long to register it's hard to take in what's going on at the moment, almost as if it could've used just a couple extra seconds to settle in for sure but that's not a detriment considering the positives elsewhere here.
