Short Film Review: Getting Away (2018) by Adam Kirkey

After arriving at an abandoned lodge in the woods, a woman finds herself stalked by a mysterious intruder.

For the most part, this short offers up quite a lot to like. The whole thing being played as nearly a silent offering makes for a more tense and chilling experience as the remote wilderness location adds to the whole experience. As the situation grows immensely more chilling with the series of photos sent to her phone indicating he's been there the whole time and is toying with her the entire time, this picks up nicely and becomes quite chilling as the intimacy is broken up by the knowledge that someone else is there with her unknowingly which is played up fantastically.

The drawn-out and engaging chase between them throughout the cabin and surrounding areas proves quite effective and enjoyable, although it does suffer somewhat from the repetitive use of the photos being sent to her on messenger to build up some scares. In the beginning, it works fantastically to generate the tension of him being there all along and unnerving her psychologically, but once that's happened it ruins a lot of the potential suspense by filling us in on the events to come up any second since we're aware of everything. Still, that's the only minor gripe to be had here.
