The Motel (2020) by Ember Burns

After checking into a motel room, a man receives the gruesome services provided at the location.

Overall, this is a really intriguing and fun effort. The hypnotic opening is quite engaging, with the preparations being laid out and the patient receiving the final instructions before entering himself and waiting for what's to come. This is amply played out well with the unsightly image of the skull-headed figure emerging out of the shadows and the gradual purpose of what's going on in a gruesome and completely shocking manner.

That the whole shocking twist comes off as well as it does here is solely due to the clinical nature of how the operation goes, from the setup to the manner in which this is cleaned up and dealt with at the end which shows off the kind of efficiency that goes over quite nicely here. The one distracting feature is the somewhat out-of-place pop-song playing over the first half that doesn't really fit in with the tone and seriousness of what's going on, yet that isn't detrimental at all.
