WIHM Special - Create Your Killer (2019) by Sarah Giercksky

Staying home for the evening, a group of friends discovers a strange box with a videotape inside labeled 'Create Your Killer.' Initially taking it for harmless fun, it becomes all too real when their maniac escapes and begins killing everyone.

This was a decidedly hilarious effort. The idea of taking the video literally and becoming able to select a movie-version killer through their VHS controls, which is never explained, adds a goofiness to the short just as easily as the video game sound effects and music playing throughout the scene. A montage going through the various killers available to choose, departing drastically from the real thing but close enough to get the joke, as well as their pointed commentary on the experience, continues that theme nicely.

In addition to the fine comedy, the straightforward slashing is top-notch. The first attack in the living room is quite sudden and shocking with a fantastic gore-gag, and the resulting chase through the upstairs bedroom carries some fine suspense as they try to remain hidden. There's a lot to like here with the fine camerawork in these scenes and the overall approach resembling the chases found in late-80s slashers. It ends somewhat suddenly which is a bit jarring as a stand-alone feature but leading into a proposed sequel is a fine way to go about this ending.
