Conversation with the Devil (2019) by Sam Hodge

Sitting alone about to end his life, a desperate man meets a stranger and begin talking with each other, revealing a series of dark secrets about him and his troubled past.

There was a lot to like with this short effort. The eeriness that comes from this short, from the back-and-forth nature of the conversation taking place where we get plenty of information about the guy about to kill himself and why he’s about to when he begins explaining his backstory that explained why. That turns into some engaging work about the stranger continually having to wave off the spectral being behind him about to kill him while he’s unaware of it which helps to add some nice tension and dramatic irony as there’s a big dramatic reveal in the final half about his relationship with his wife that helps to really sell this one.

That becomes the driving theme of the short where the entire purpose of their meeting turns into a means of allowing him to grow a spine and become more of a man. Realizing that the pathetic nature of his life has been his own doing and he could’ve been a much stronger and more capable individual without the urging of his companion, there’s a potential for a great story to work with that instead ends on a whimper with the final resolution. The immediacy of how it ends is quite shocking and abrupt leaving this with several questions as to how this all worked, but otherwise this was quite enjoyable.
