Blood Play (2018) by Avishek Das

During a wild week, a deranged serial killer who has psychotic suicidal tendencies carries out a brutal, bloodsoaked rampage in a small suburb forcing a small group of friends to look for him to put a stop to his activities.

For the most part, this was a rather enjoyable short. It's most impressive attribute is the striking cinematography, showcasing some fine visuals, from the dark and eerie rituals that showcase the figure in dark red light which leave quite an impression. Likewise, there's some great work here in detailing the activities of the serial killer. The opening ambush on the friend coming to check on him offers a nice startle once you realize what's happening, while the centerpiece sequence torturing his captive is quite brutal and intense. The way he toys with the captive is chilling, and the photography over the mutilated is really striking.

It does have one main issue. The hurried and rushed storyline at work here doesn't really offer up any explanation for anything that happens here. By jumping around on the various dates when the crimes are being committed, this side-steps the potential to shed light on what's going on by restricting the dialog detailing the exact nature of the killers' condition, his patterns and his patterns to be a complete mystery as a result. It's sometimes possible to lose track of who the killer is, and that's due to the rushed story preventing this from really diving into the characters. Some of the low-budget effects look dodgy, but that can't be held against this one at all as the rest of this one is rather enjoyable.
