Review:
Overall, this was a rather strong indie mockumentary with a lot going for it. The main setup, focusing on her going around the team on their various missions, trying to get interviews out or looking into how the different pieces of equipment are supposed to work, but getting interrupted by their more competent rivals or being shown up by the inability to understand what they’re actually supposed to be doing, makes for a solid enough time here. The whole thing relies on the joke that the reporter is the only one who has any common sense or professionalism in what she’s doing, making it out to be almost accidental in how her doing her job exposes their inability to actually go around ghost hunting since everything is upended by their incompetence at handling at the profession as well as personality ticks with each member of the team given such clear-cut identities that there’s some fun to be had with these people undergoing the different investigations.
As things are going and practically everything that could go wrong does go wrong, the inclination and tone present here are based incredibly heavily on the big theme of their inept nature, hiding the truth about their status in the community. Since everything is determined to roll headlong into the worst possible outcome to show off how down-on-their-luck and inept for how long they’ve been doing this, the laughs are constant and frequent as each new investigation goes awry in a new method than before, and while it might make the whole thing feel repetitive with the film hitting the same beat every time out, the chemistry and charm attempted here is a lot of fun here. That does make a lot of this one a bit more enjoyable when not dealing with the type of hokes featured here, and with the breezy run-time to help bring everything along even more, this one is a lot of fun.
Overview: ****/5
An immensely fun and likable genre comedy, there’s a lot to like with this one that gives the film enough to overcome some of the minor drawbacks featured that bring it down. Those who appreciate this kind of genre fare or who are curious about it will have the most to like with this one, while others turned off by these factors should heed caution.
